Word of Mouth Tip #49: Give customers something exclusive to share with a friend

December 21, 2009

Don’t let your orders go out the door without including something valuable customers can share with a friend. We’re not talking about ads or brand slogans, we’re talking about something that makes the talker feel smart or generous.

Classic examples include special discounts, passes to exclusive events, or behind-the-scenes stuff. It doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated — just something outsiders can’t get anywhere else.

rue la laHow a word of mouth marketing supergenius does it:

Rue La La — a members-only apparel retailer — includes a few printed community invites with each order. The cards read: “You’re my friend. So I’m sharing the love.”

New fans are then able to join the Rue La La community by logging on and entering their friend’s email address.
