Word of Mouth Tip #16: Give people something to show a friend

Don’t let your customers leave without giving them something to show to a friend.

In the word of mouth world, we call these “triggers.” They’re handouts, extra free samples, lots of coupons, stickers, snacks — anything that helps them think of you long after they’ve left your store or inspires people they see to ask, “Hey, where’d you get that?”

How a word of mouth marketing supergenius does it:

Fatburger has turned their entire “Triple King Challenge” into one giant word of mouth trigger. The contest alone — where contestants eat 1.5 pounds of meat — is a fun and buzzworthy promotion, but Fatburger ensures everyone talks about it with all the triggers that go with it:

  • Winners get a certificate of achievement which get posted in dorm rooms and in offices
  • Winners get a T-shirt and bumper sticker, which help talkers start conversations with strangers
  • Winners get their picture on the wall, creating another reason for fans to brag and bring in their friends

PS – They don’t call it a “challenge” for nothing. Here’s what you’re taking on.
