Two offices in two cities: How we collaborate

December 10, 2014 by Cale Johnson

We have staff in Austin and Chicago, and most teams have at least one teammate in each city.

Collaboration is also really important to us — so that means we have to be really good at getting together, even when we’re almost 1,000 miles apart.

Skype helps a lot with that — it’s our go-to tool for quick collaboration. We also use GoToMeeting, WebEx, and Google Hangouts depending on the size, scale, and bandwidth requirements of the meeting.

But whatever tool we use, we’re always on video. You’ll never see us collaborating by phone, because it’s just not quite the same if you can’t see the people you’re working with.

And above all, our most important rule of thumb: Use Skype as if the teammate is sitting next to you. If you’d walk over and ask them about something — you should use Skype in the same way.

No, it’s not quite the same as being in the same office — but it works.
