In her BlogWell New York case study presentation, “Social Collaboration – Together We Tell Better Stories,” VP of Social Media Technologies, Rhonda Lowry, describes how social media technologies have fundamentally changed the media landscape by affording people opportunities to collaborate in places and in ways that were previously unimaginable — the result of which is often richer and more compelling than the simple sum of individual contributions.

Using CNN’s coverage of November’s presidential election as an example, Rhonda shows that collaboration with fans is paramount to social media success. During the election, CNN ran segments on their website called iReports, which were fan-made videos that turned anybody into a journalist. The access that CNN granted to these fans spiked traffic to their website and Twitter account, and helped set records for simultaneous live video streams.
